Retire in Altenas, Costa Rica

Those who retire in Atenas, Costa Rica (and the National Geographic) claim the “best climate on earth” in this mountain valley, just 25 miles from the capital of San Jose.    The town is coffee central with flourishing plantations in a lush landscape.  No wonder so many expats have picked Atenas as their home abroad! A town of about 5,500 and 27,500 in the metro area, Atenas has a great little farmers market, several very nice restaurants, banks, a health center, and shops.   You will also find supermarkets, wifi, a hospital, ATMs, and hardware stores with everything you need.  There is a perfectly white Catholic church in the town center with palm trees and a welcoming community with a Spanish colonial flair. Atenas is the best of many worlds.  Life in a rural community, close to the big city of San Jose, and just 30 minutes from the beach.  Perfect climate.  There is always a parade and festivals with dancing and music.  And more coffee than you can drink in a lifetime! We found a new home in a gated community with 3 bedrooms, open floor-plan, 3 bathrooms, granite countertops, on 1.75 acres for $350,000 US.   There is also a lot of open land for sale where you could build a house to suit your needs.   There are a number of these homes in gated communities that are available for long term rentals.  Expensive for the area, they run in the $1,500 – $2000 US a month.    Homes in town are much less expensive with 2 bedrooms-2bathrooms in the $700-900 range.   Atenas is one of the safest communities we’ve found in Costa Rica.
