Yahoo! One year ago today, our Retirebook website was born. My mom and I started our online adventure hoping to show others how easy it is to live on a small retirement budget, and it’s been a very rewarding experience. Not rewarding in a money making sort of way, but in a story telling sense. We decided early on to concentrate on writing good content, and and try not to make any money during our first few years. I have read from other bloggers that it can be challenging making money at first, so we took the pressure off by just writing for the fun of it.
We have been getting some really good feedback from our readers and other blogs and businesses. The marketing folks at Zillow have been cheering us on whenever we mention them in our stories. And other businesses have re-posted our stories and mentioned us in their travel magazines. Getting feedback from our readers has been very rewarding as well, and every compliment we get – makes us keep on writing more and more. Some of our enthusiastic readers have even chipped in by writing about some of their adventures too.
I have always been passionate about travelling and finding ways to save money. On top of that I have always wanted to start writing my own blog about saving for retirement. When I met my fiance for the first time in Thailand three years ago, I thought about moving there, and I wanted to write about what it costs to retire there. So I started searching for a catchy website name that I could buy. After about 6 months of searching, I found that nobody had owned the name Retirebook. So I snatched it up, and the rest is history. The next week, I called my mom while she was travelling around the country in her RV, and I told her about my plans with Retirebook. When my mom got back home, she called me up and shared some designs about the site. I knew she was a really good writer, so I didn’t hesitate to ask her if she wanted to start this adventure with me fifty-fifty. She was a little nervous about learning WordPress, but she picked it up real fast, and like I said, the rest is history. That woman can write some great articles.
Since we started this site, I have traveled to South East Asia several times and I got to see Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Mom has traveled all over the world her whole life and I think this is why she enjoys writing about travelling and living in different parts of the world. It’s been a fun first year, and I can’t wait to see what the next one brings!
