Those who retire in Lake Havasu City, Arizona are the true sun lovers! Sitting on a wide spot along the Colorado River where you can see California on the other shore, the city is an oasis in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Imagine our surprise to find the famous London Bridge – imported from Great Britain in the 1960s! Really! You can drive or walk across this pretty big stone bridge to an island where you will find three RV parks, some private homes, and a bit of shopping and restaurants. The 52,000 people who live here think this is just heaven! We found that 26.9% of them are over 65 – almost double the national average. You can easily find a 3 bedroom, 2 bath newer home for about $150,000. Long term rentals run $800-$1,500 a month.
Lake Havasu City swells to probably twice its population during spring break when young people flock to the sun from cooler climates to enjoy a week in the sun. It can get pretty rowdy.
On a recent visit to Lake Havasu, we found plenty of shopping, some fabulous Mexican food, a big Walmart, Safeway, Joann’s Crafts and anything else you could want. Hint: Have you ever had fresh tortillas? While in the southwest, find a Mexican Market – our favorite is the Cardenas Market. They have a fresh tortilla section that also makes fresh guacamole and salsa. Their produce can’t be beat!
